Look Who is Here: The American White Pelican

As greater numbers of the American White
Pelicans are spotted in our area, curiosity about these birds increases. This pelican is one of the largest North American Pelican.
American birds at 4 feet tall and weighing 11-20 pounds. It has a wingspan of 9 feet and is magnificent in flight. Appearing all white while on water or land, its black flight feathers are distinctive as it flies. The large heavy bill and the legs are orange yellow, with a yellow plate evident on the upper bill during the breeding season. While this bird is awkward on the ground and appears a little prehistoric, that changes as it takes to the air. These birds can soar long distances and their wing motion is slow and smooth, a spectacular flier!
